Reacting to attacks by temperance reformers in late Victorian England, brewers and publicans formed `the trade', a pressure group with a formidable reputation. However, in this new study, David Gutzke convincingly demonstrates that the trade's awesome reputation was exaggerated, surmounting internal discord only briefly to defeat the threat of prohibiton in the 1890s. |
