`A comprehensive study of the careers, qualification, duties, and activities of chaplaines serving in all the various parliamentary armies... A work of impressive scholarship which will remain an invaluable guide for all future research on ther parliamentary armies. JOURNAL OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORYIn the political and religious confusion of the later 1640s it was thought that radical preachers zealously exhorting the victorious New Model Army were behind the demands of the rank and file for religious toleration and a more democratic constitution. Anne Laurence has altered all that- If we want to explore the origins of the New Model soldiers radicalism in 1647-9 we must look beyond the dwindling ranks of their preachers. EHR
