Dr White is one of the world’s leading Nelson scholars and a much-published author. His research, as part of the five-year Nelson Letters Project, has been unprecedented in its scope and thoroughness, leading him to uncover a huge cache of around 1,200 previously unpublished letters.

Dr White’s groundbreaking use of electronic research methods has allowed him to scour archives worldwide and to accurately identify those holdings worthy of a closer inspection. The letters reproduced in Nelson – The New Letters come from several collections throughout the UK, the United States, Denmark and Italy.

DR COLIN WHITE is Director of the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth, UK. One of Britain's leading naval historians, he is recognised worldwide as an authority on Nelson. His scholarly achievement on the Nelson Letters Project was acknowledged by the award of a Doctorate of Letters from the University of Portsmouth. In 2005, he was the mastermind behind the hugely successful 'Trafalgar Festival', for which he was awarded the Longman-History Today Trustees Prize. His contribution to the promotion of naval history generally was marked in 2006 by the award of the Maritime Foundation's prestigious 'Desmond Wettern Award'.

Dr White is the author of Nelson the Admiral, The Nelson Encyclopaedia, The Nelson Companion, and 1797: Nelson’s Year of Destiny.
